The demonstration forest is part of the American Tree Farm system.  This program is sponsored by the American Forest Foundation and the forest industry in order to promote and recognize good forest management on private land and lands associated with schools and universities.

One may take a self-guided tour of the Old Fort Lewis Demonstration Forest.  The tour begins on the east side of State Hwy 140 across the road from the SJBRC headquarters.   Tour stops are marked by numbered signs which correspond to a brochure.  The tour is 5.8 miles long.
